Five generations of Hirtzbergers have lived here, tending the vines which have been planted in the Wachau Valley the 13th Century. Today wine is produced with all the modern know-how at our disposal, but still following the tradition of the Wachau valley and our family.
The quality and character of every wine is created by various factors. A crucial aspect in wine production is the terroir, the interaction between climate, soil and topography.
Each of Hirtzberger’s wines is based on the detailed knowledge of each end every vineyard and the experience which has accumulated over five generations.
About WineAccording to myth the Rote Tor (red gate) is part of the old town wall which was saturated with blood, during the Swedish Wars. They grow GV grapes in the vinyards below, in both quality levels - Federspiel and Smaragd. The soil-type consists of gneiss, mica and schist and brown soil.
Tasting NotesThis wine offers a delightful mingling of lilac, lime, and beet root; quite delicate palate weight; silky and refined texture; generous juiciness; and a finish with saline, stony suggestions of minerality. Enjoy it over the coming 4-5 years: this is never a wine that tires – or that one tires of – quickly.
